Tyre choice did not hurt spectacle
Pirelli believes that even a more aggressive choice of tyres for the European Grand Prix may not have been enough to help make the Valencia race a thriller. The Italian tyre manufacturer elected to bring its more conservative medium compound this weekend because it wanted to run it in race conditions before the British GP - and the easier time that drivers had with tyre degradation helped contribute to a less exciting race that has been the case at other events this year.

Spies thrilled first win was at Assen
Ben Spies said it meant a great deal to him that his maiden MotoGP victory came at the famous Assen track, as he clinched reaching the top step of the podium for the first time in the world championship in today's Dutch Grand Prix. The American led from the outset, and got an early break on the field when his Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was taken out by Marco Simoncelli (Gresini Honda) just behind him. Spies said the win was particularly poignant given Assen's heritage in motorcycle racing and the fact that Yamaha was celebrating its 50th anniversary in grand prix racing this weekend

Paul di Resta says he is satisfied with his recovery in qualifying after losing nearly all of his practice time on Friday when Force India's test driver Nico Hulkenberg crashed his car. The Scot will start 12th on the grid for the European Grand Prix, two places behind his team-mate Adrian Sutil, and di Resta said afterwards that he might have gone even quicker but for a mistake on his final flying lap in Q2. McLaren duo call for more performance
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both called for the team to find more downforce on the car as soon as possible after they took disappointing fourth and sixth places in Valencia. Nick Heidfeld believes the new rule that stops teams from changing the engine mapping between qualifying and the race is going "too far". The FIA announced after the Canadian Grand Prix that teams will have to use the same maps both in the race and in qualifying, in a move aimed at stopping radical qualifying-only maps. Red Bull Racing Team's general manager Jay Frye is optimistic about the prospects of keeping the team afloat after the energy drinks giant announced it is pulling the plug on its Sprint Cup team at the end of the season. The Formula 1 Commission is set to be asked to consider switching the sport's future engines to 1.6-litre V6 turbos in a bid to end the ongoing stalemate about future regulations, AUTOSPORT has learned. Ahead of a crunch meeting in London today to discuss engine regulations for 2013, amid disagreement between manufacturers over plans to move to 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines, it is understood that a final push has been made by the car makers to find a solution that is acceptable to all the sport's stakeholders. Sources have revealed that those behind-the-scenes discussions between the engine manufacturers have resulted in a plan for the four-cylinder plans to be dropped and instead 1.6-litre V6s to come into force from 2014 - one year later than the current change in regulations is planned to come into force

15-time AMA champion and full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver, Ricky Carmichael, is set to make his 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) debut in the No. 30 Monster Energy Chevrolet at Road America. Carmichael made his NNS debut in 2010, finishing a career-best 18th at Kansas Speedway. He is scheduled to make three more NNS starts in 2011 at Daytona International Speedway, Richmond International Raceway and Phoenix International Raceway.

Nasr dominates wet race three
Felipe Nasr extended his already substantial lead of the British Formula 3 championship by dominating a wet final race at Brands Hatch this afternoon. The Brazilian Carlin driver started third, but leapt straight into second as Sino Visions Adderly Fong was slow away from second on the grid. Nasr then harried his polesitting team-mate Rupert Svendsen-Cook, before diving through to take the lead at Graham Hill bend on lap seven of 26.
Winterbottom denies Whincup pole
Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom beat championship leader Jamie Whincup (Triple Eight Holden) to pole position for the first of this weekend's races at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway. The top 10 shoot-out qualifying system is back in use this weekend, and after going quickest in the opening part of qualifying, Winterbottom was the last man out in the pole session - going on to edge out Whincup by just 0.01 seconds. Stone Brothers' Shane van Gisbergen registered his best qualifying result of 2011 so far in third, sharing row two with Dick Johnson Ford driver Steven Johnson.

Muller wins race two at Brno
Yvan Muller completed another successful weekend for Chevrolet by taking victory in the second World Touring Car Championship race at Brno. Having topped every session ahead of both races this weekend, Muller lost out to team-mate Rob Huff in race one, so was delighted to take the race two chequered flag over four seconds ahead of his nearest rivals. The win is the Muller's second of the season following his victorious second race at Hungaroring.

Citroen privateer Petter Solberg says he could have gone even faster through the opening morning of the Acropolis Rally, despite taking almost a second per mile out of his nearest rival through the second stage. Solberg's time on the 24-mile Elatia test stunned the rest of the field as he opened up a 20.3-second lead over Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala. Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip says he would 'love' to return to the Le Mans 24 Hours after an eventful first outing at La Sarthe in a AF Corse-run Ferrari 458. Trulli predicts eventful race if wet
Jarno Trulli is anticipating a eventful Canadian Grand Prix if the rain that has drenched the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve four hours before the race holds. Gavin says BMWs tough to beat
Works Chevrolet Corvette driver Oliver Gavin believes BMW has an advantage over the rest of the GTE field at Le Mans this year. BMW suffered a torrid 24 Hours in 2010, but the latest version of the M3 has proved quick this season. Daniel Abt set the pace on the second and final day of F3 Euro Series testing at Lausitz in Germany. Shedden victorious in wet thriller
Gordon Shedden took a fine victory in a dramatic first British Touring Car race at Oulton Park this afternoon. Drizzle before the start meant that some drivers elected to start on wets, some on slicks, and others with slicks on the front and wets on the back. Poleman Shedden chose to start with a mixture and was beaten into Old Hall by Honda team-mate Matt Neal, starting on wets.

Jorge Lorenzo admitted that the had hoped to be a greater threat for Catalunya Grand Prix pole, but was satisfied with third in the end given a lack of grip during qualifying. The world champion was very close to benchmark Casey Stoner's pace in final practice, but could not replicate that form in qualifying, where he just beat Yamaha team-mate Ben Spies and Honda's Andrea Dovizioso to third.

Edwards has surgery in Barcelona
Colin Edwards is undergoing surgery in Barcelona's Dexeus Institute Hospital today after sustaining a broken right collarbone in Catalunya practice on Friday. The Tech 3 Yamaha rider crashed at Turn 5 on an out-lap during the damp second practice session, and will consequently miss a race for the first time in his MotoGP career. Team boss Herve Poncharal said Edwards' injury came as a particular blow because he had been in good form this season and was very optimistic about this weekend's race.
Engel: Spielberg penalty unfair
Maro Engel believes that his drive-through penalty at the Spielberg DTM round was unfairly awarded. The German was penalised after race officials adjudged him to have caused an avoidable accident by spinning Edoardo Mortara out of third place at the first corner of the race. Engel, who had started from a season's best sixth place in his 2008-spec Mucke Mercedes, finished 14th, but would have been at least sixth if the time lost to the penalty had not been a factor
Patrick in Nationwide top 10 again
Danica Patrick scored another good finish on her return to the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Chicagoland Speedway, claiming 10th in Saturday's race. Patrick started the race from 16th on the grid having run in a similar position during Friday's practice sessions at a track she was visiting for the second time in a stock car, having already raced there last year. The JR Motorsports driver spent most of the first half of the race in the top 15 and was able to get as high as 11th at one point, before dropping a few positions in the order and then a lap down during a long green-flag run.

Edwards tipped for quick recovery
Tech 3 Yamaha team boss Herve Poncharal expects Colin Edwards to make a relatively quick recovery from his broken collarbone after surgery on the injury went smoothly. Edwards crashed during Friday afternoon practice at Catalunya, and had a plate and seven screws inserted on the injured bone in an operation in Barcelona's Dexeus Institute Hospital, carried out by specialist surgeons Dr Xavier Mir and Dr Victor Marlet.
